Two injured in Lake Erie boat crash late Thursday, Monroe Co. sheriff says

Speed and alcohol are believed to be a factor, the sheriff's office said.

MONROE COUNTY, Michigan — Two people were taken to the hospital with critical injuries after a boat sank near a Lake Erie harbor late Thursday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.

Multiple 911 calls came into the sheriff's office just before 11:30 p.m. after witnesses reported a boat sinking off the entrance to Bolles Harbor in Monroe Charter Township, near the Hoffman Memorial Fishing Pier.

Law enforcement responded to the area, where they said they found a 62-year-old man and his 38-year-old son clinging to rocks in the water. Both were rescued from the water and taken to the hospital for what the sheriff's office described as serious injuries.

The sheriff's office said their preliminary investigation indicated the two victims were operating a 1983 26-foot Chris-Craft boat. The boat crashed into the seawall near channel marker #10 while attempting to enter the harbor, rupturing the vessel's hull and causing it to partially sink in the channel.
