TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Fair Housing Center's "Welcome In My Backyard" program was launched a few years ago with the goal of creating communities that welcome diversity and inclusion.
Since then, hundreds in the Toledo area have signed the pledge.
Sarah Jenkins is one of the people who helped launch WIMBY, which has now expanded to other parts of Ohio.
According to Jenkins, even though the program has been in our area for some time, the mission is important now more than ever.
"It's kind of interesting because when we initially had this idea to launch this, that was, as I said a few years ago, and it seems as we go on, the need for WIMBY has only increased," Jenkins said. "Just because of the things that have been going on in our country. It seems like WIMBY is becoming more and more relevant and more and more needed."
She said that WIMBY helps people understand the role they play, so they can stand up and speak out, helping prevent the same problems from continuing in the future. It's one of the tools that can be used to help foster understanding.
Jenkins said there are a few ways to get involved and become more aware. More information on WIMBY can be found here.
