TOLEDO, Ohio — Residents of the neighborhood around Waite High School in east Toledo are concerned after a weekend drive-by shooting at a basketball left two juveniles hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
"I heard a crack, crack, crack about eight times," said neighbor Danny Newton. "It sounded like someone hitting the side of our house with something."
Danny and Jamie Newton said they've never heard gunshots on Morrison Drive, even after living there for 47 years.
"Every day you turn on the news and you hear about a shooting, or two, or three," Danny said. "It seems like it's in other parts of town."
Toledo police say a group of juveniles were playing at the basketball court when a person or people started shooting while driving past them.
Jamie believes that the court brings trouble.
"The worst part about it is it happened at a school. I mean, what's going to happen?" Jamie said. "Is there going to be a daytime shooting when the kids are out there?"
Other neighbors think the court does bring some good to the community, though, by keeping kids busy while out of school. WTOL 11 spoke with someone who was at the scene of the shooting right after it happened.
"My husband tied one of the tourniquets on one of the kid's legs," the area resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said. "One of the young men told me to hold his hand and call his mom. So, I did."
The Newtons said they don't want to see something like this happen again.
"I wish they would patrol the area a little more," Danny said.
"I wish they would get rid of the basketball court," Jamie said. "We don't need that. It's nothing but trouble and it's going to keep being trouble."
Toledo police say no suspects have been taken into custody.
Toledo Public Schools declined to comment.
