Washington Local Schools likely to make cuts to numerous positions

The Board of Education will vote Wednesday whether or not to lay off 57 employees

TOLEDO, Ohio —

More layoffs are potentially coming to the Toledo area and this time it is one of our local school districts making the cuts. Washington Local Schools is likely to cut positions as leaders work on changes ahead of the new school year.

Today, the school district announced guidelines that they will follow to have a safe return back to school.

The biggest buzz surrounded the vote coming this Wednesday. The Washington Local School District's Board of Education will vote on a decision whether or not to lay off 57 employees.

At Trilby Park, located in the Washington Local School Districtsome say anyone working in schools shouldn't have to deal with layoffs.

"I really don't like that they're laying off any teachers or anybody dealing with any type of schools. Not even just Washington Local Schools, but anywhere. Teachers are the most important occupation out here, they do a lot. Us parents expect a lot from them and they get so little, so to lay them off, that's just crazy," said Tony Rone, a family member of a WLS student.

To assure the safety of the students and to combat the spread of the coronavirus, they will temporarily close cafeterias and libraries in the beginning of the school year.

They will continue to serve breakfast and lunch to students but in a grab-and-go style. Cooking in the cafeteria will no longer be available.

Some disagree with this idea and feel students will be robbed from school memories.

"I feel like they should have that experience just respect the stay 6 feet, you know, just stay social distancing. Just respect that they should be able to go to the cafeteria just like they do the restaurants. Mimic what the restaurants are doing it they can even have picnic tables outside so they can still see their friends," added Rone.

Every 30 days, officials will revisit these decisions and monitor the coronavirus situation in the community.
