57 Washington Local Schools workers might be laid off

The library and cafeterias will not be open at the beginning of the school year due to the pandemic at Washington Local Schools.

TOLEDO, Ohio —

Fifty-seven workers might be saying goodbye to Washington Local Schools after an announcement made by the board Monday, who said their decision will be made based on the safety of their students and staff.

The library and cafeterias will not be open at the beginning of the school year due to the pandemic at Washington Local Schools. That means workers in those departments may lose their jobs.

"So unfortunately what that meant is that we really didn't need all those nutrition workers to start the year that's a temporary thing we hope as a vaccine developed as soon as possible we're bringing our Washington local family members back into the fold," Superintendent Dr. Kadee Anstadt said.

Cooking in the cafeteria will not be permitted. The school district will switch to a grab-an- go style lunch and breakfast but will remain to serve a nutritional meal for their students.

"We'll still be following all the federal guidelines, we'll still expect to serve fresh fruit, we'll have vegetables in their bag, their carton milk, their grain that might be an Uncrustable or a Lunchable, (...) cheese sticks, yogurt, cereal, pop tarts, all the things that will normally do for breakfast and lunch. We will still have available, we just won't have hot chicken nuggets," Anstadt said.

Every 30 days, officials from the district will revisit these decisions to see when the library and cafeterias will be open back up again. They added they announce if those 57 jobs will stay or go Wednesday after the school board meeting.
