OAK HARBOR, Ohio — A 17-year-old girl and an Ottawa County sheriff's deputy are in the hospital following a three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning.

The incident happened just before 6:30 a.m. on SR 163 near milepost 17.

According to police, two occupied sheriff's cruisers were parked side by side in a parking lot on the north side of SR 163 when a vehicle traveling eastbound on the same road swerved left of center, running off the north side. That driver was allegedly trying to avoid hitting another car that was about to turn left into the same parking lot where the cruisers were parked.

The 17-year-old driver struck a landscape mound and went airborne approximately 80 feet before landing on the rear of a patrol car. The second patrol car was also struck in the initial impact.

The teen sustained a serious head injury and was transported to the hospital. She was reportedly wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Ottawa County Sheriff Deputy Marc Nye, 43, suffered from incapacitating injuries and was transported to a separate hospital.

The other officer on the scene, 49-year-old James Reagan was uninjured in the incident.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected to be a contributing factor.

This crash remains under investigation.
